Acknowledgement of Country
As we come together in this virtual space, physically dispersed and digitally constructed, we take a moment to reflect on the meaning of place, Acknowledging the various traditional lands and waters on which we share these stories.
We Acknowledge any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples sharing in this space and pay our respects to all elders past, present and emerging. We recognise First Nations peoples’ continued connection to Country and enduring strength and resilience as Traditional Custodians.
We recognise the role of colonialism in the illegal dispossession of land, in the genocide and marginalisation of First Nations peoples, cultures and languages, Acknowledging the trials, tribulations and traumas endured as a result.
We reflect on the role of social work in settler colonialism, in the removal of children from their families, in the incarceration of adults and minors, in the gatekeeping of healthcare, housing and welfare services, and in the implementation of assimilation policies both past and present.
We reflect on the role of Acknowledgement as an integral part of reconciliation, while understanding its limitations in the absence of Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination.
We stand in solidarity with all Indigenous peoples around the world in continuing struggles for political independence and emancipation, for the returning of stolen land, and for justice for historical and ongoing crimes and atrocities.
